South America Telecom Network – Remote Base Station Power

Project Background

A leading telecommunications company expanding 4G/LTE coverage across the Amazon basin faced a fundamental challenge: hundreds of planned base station sites were located in areas with no road access, no power grid, and no reliable fuel supply chain. Many sites were accessible only by river boat or helicopter, making traditional diesel generator solutions impractical due to fuel delivery logistics and maintenance difficulties.

The telecom operator needed compact, efficient, and low-maintenance power solutions that could operate autonomously for extended periods while withstanding the extreme humidity, rainfall, and temperature fluctuations of the tropical rainforest environment.

The Challenge

  • Location: Amazon basin, multiple sites across 3 states — roadless, river-only access
  • Environment: 95%+ humidity, seasonal flooding, 15-40°C temperature range
  • Load per site: 15-30 kVA (typical 4G base station with air conditioning)
  • Number of sites: 200+ locations in Phase 1
  • Fuel logistics: Delivery only by boat, 2-4 times per year during dry season
  • Maintenance access: Helicopter only, scheduled visits 2-3 times per year
  • Required autonomy: Minimum 6 months between fuel deliveries

Our Solution

MechVolt Power developed a customized hybrid power solution specifically designed for remote telecom applications:

  • Primary power: Compact 30 kVA diesel generators optimized for low fuel consumption at partial loads, with extended maintenance intervals
  • Fuel efficiency: Variable-speed generator technology that adjusts engine RPM to match actual load, reducing fuel consumption by up to 30% compared to fixed-speed generators
  • Fuel storage: Integrated 5,000-liter double-walled fuel tank providing 6+ months of autonomous operation
  • Enclosure: Tropical-rated IP55 enclosure with anti-corrosion treatment, elevated mounting to protect against seasonal flooding
  • Remote monitoring: Satellite-connected SCADA system providing real-time performance data, fuel level monitoring, and predictive maintenance alerts to the central operations center
  • Solar hybrid ready: Pre-wired for future solar panel integration to further reduce fuel dependency

Results

Phase 1 deployment covered 200 base station sites over 18 months. The system’s fuel efficiency exceeded initial projections, with many sites achieving 7-8 months of autonomy between fuel deliveries. The satellite monitoring system has been instrumental in optimizing fuel delivery logistics — rather than scheduling fixed deliveries, the operations team now plans routes based on actual fuel levels across all sites.

Site uptime has consistently exceeded 99.8%, significantly better than the operator’s initial target of 99.5%. The variable-speed technology has reduced total fuel consumption by approximately 28% compared to the operator’s previous fixed-speed generator deployments, resulting in substantial cost savings and reduced environmental impact.

Client Feedback

“The fuel savings alone have been transformative for our operations in the Amazon. Before MechVolt’s solution, we were spending a fortune on helicopter fuel deliveries. Now, with 6+ months of autonomy and smart monitoring, we’ve cut our logistics costs by nearly 40% while improving reliability.”
