Southeast Asian Island Resort – Off-Grid Power Solution

S - MechVolt Power

Project Background

A boutique hospitality group in the Philippines acquired a pristine private island in the Visayas region with plans to develop an exclusive 40-villa eco-resort. The island had no electrical grid connection, no piped water, and no existing infrastructure — creating a blank slate that required a complete, self-sufficient power and utilities system.

The resort’s power needs were diverse and demanding: guest villas with air conditioning and modern amenities, restaurants and bars, a seawater desalination plant, wastewater treatment facility, dive center, and staff quarters. The developer wanted a solution that was not only reliable but also aligned with the resort’s eco-friendly brand positioning.

The Challenge

  • Location: Private island, Philippines — completely off-grid, no infrastructure
  • Power demand: 600 kVA peak load (resort full occupancy), 200 kVA base load (nighttime)
  • Load profile: Highly variable — peak during daytime activities, low at night
  • Fuel logistics: Diesel delivered by supply boat every 2 months
  • Noise sensitivity: Guest areas required minimal noise, especially at night
  • Environmental goals: Resort brand emphasized sustainability and low carbon footprint
  • Space limit: Limited flat land suitable for power generation equipment

Our Solution

MechVolt Power designed a hybrid power system combining diesel generators with solar energy, optimized for the resort’s variable load profile and environmental goals:

  • Primary power: 2 × 400 kVA ultra-quiet diesel generators in advanced soundproof enclosures, with automatic load-following technology
  • Solar hybrid: 200 kWp rooftop solar panel system integrated with the generators, reducing diesel consumption during daylight hours
  • Energy storage: 500 kWh battery bank to store solar energy and handle short-term load spikes without starting additional generators
  • Smart control: Intelligent energy management system that automatically optimizes between solar, battery, and diesel based on load demand and weather conditions
  • Ultra-quiet design: Special low-noise enclosures achieving 62 dBA @ 7m — quieter than normal conversation, ensuring guest comfort
  • Fuel storage: 20,000-liter underground fuel tank providing 60 days of autonomy at average load

Results

The hybrid power system has been operating successfully since the resort’s opening, providing reliable 24/7 electricity with remarkable efficiency. The solar-diesel hybrid configuration has reduced diesel consumption by 45% compared to a generator-only solution, with solar providing 60-70% of daytime energy needs.

The ultra-quiet generators have been a major success — guests consistently praise the peaceful island atmosphere, with no noise complaints related to power generation. The battery storage system handles most short-term load fluctuations, meaning generators often run at optimal efficiency rather than constantly ramping up and down.

The resort’s sustainability credentials have been enhanced by the hybrid system, which has become a talking point in marketing materials and guest tours. The reduced diesel dependency has also lowered the environmental impact and simplified logistics — supply boat deliveries are now needed only every 2 months instead of monthly.

Client Feedback

“Our guests come to the island for peace and tranquility. MechVolt’s ultra-quiet hybrid system means they never have to think about where their power comes from — it’s just there, silently, reliably. And the solar integration aligns perfectly with our sustainability mission.”
