MechVolt Power Completes Emergency Generator Delivery for Hospital Complex in Nigeria

Emergency Power Solution Delivered in Record Time

In a critical operation that underscores MechVolt Power’s commitment to reliable energy solutions, the company has successfully completed the emergency delivery of three soundproof diesel generator sets to a newly constructed hospital complex in Lagos, Nigeria. The project, which spanned from initial order to full commissioning in just 45 days, provides uninterrupted backup power for one of West Africa’s most advanced healthcare facilities.

Background: A Healthcare Facility in Urgent Need

The 200-bed hospital complex, which includes state-of-the-art operating theaters, an intensive care unit (ICU), a neonatal care center, and diagnostic imaging departments, required a robust and dependable power backup system. Nigeria’s power grid, while improving, still experiences frequent outages that can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. For a hospital where even a momentary loss of power can have life-threatening consequences — particularly in the operating theater and ICU — a reliable backup power solution was not just desirable but absolutely essential.

The hospital’s management initially reached out to several generator suppliers, but the tight construction timeline and stringent noise regulations in the residential area where the hospital is located meant that most vendors could not meet the requirements within the needed timeframe.

The Solution: Three 500kVA Soundproof Perkins Generator Sets

MechVolt Power proposed a comprehensive solution built around three 500kVA soundproof diesel generator sets powered by reliable Perkins engines. Each unit is enclosed in a specially designed acoustic canopy that keeps noise levels below 75 dB(A) at one meter — well within the limits required for residential and healthcare environments.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Engine: Perkins 1106 series diesel engine
  • Alternator: Stamford PI734E
  • Rating: 500 kVA prime power / 550 kVA standby
  • Sound Level: < 75 dB(A) at 1 meter
  • Fuel Tank: Integrated 800-liter base tank with 24-hour autonomy
  • Control Panel: Deep Sea Electronics DSE8610

Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) System

A critical component of the installation is the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) system that MechVolt engineered specifically for this project. The ATS continuously monitors the utility power supply and automatically starts the generators within 10 seconds of detecting a power failure. The system is configured to prioritize load sequencing — life-critical systems such as operating theaters, ICU ventilators, and patient monitoring equipment receive power first, followed by general lighting, HVAC, and administrative areas.

The three generators are configured in an N+1 redundancy arrangement, meaning that the hospital’s full load can be supported by any two generators while the third serves as backup. This ensures that even if one generator is offline for maintenance, the hospital remains fully protected.

45 Days from Order to Commissioning

The 45-day turnaround was achieved through MechVolt’s streamlined supply chain and dedicated project management team. The company maintained weekly video conferences with the hospital’s engineering team throughout the process, providing real-time updates on manufacturing progress, shipping logistics, and installation planning.

Upon arrival in Lagos, MechVolt’s field service engineers oversaw the complete installation, including fuel system connections, exhaust routing, electrical integration, ATS commissioning, and full load testing. Each generator was individually tested at 100% load for over four hours, followed by a parallel operation test and simulated power failure scenarios to validate the ATS response time.

Client Testimonial

“The reliability of our power supply was our single greatest concern when designing this hospital. MechVolt Power not only met every specification we set but delivered the entire system weeks ahead of what we thought possible. During our commissioning tests, the ATS responded flawlessly, and the generators took on full hospital load within seconds. The MechVolt team’s professionalism and technical expertise have given us complete confidence that our patients will never be at risk from a power failure. This is exactly the level of partnership we need as we expand healthcare access in Nigeria.”
