West Africa Mining Site – Primary Power Supply for Gold Extraction Operations

Project Background

In a remote gold mining region of West Africa, a major extraction company needed to establish a reliable primary power system capable of running continuously in harsh environmental conditions. With no national power grid access within 150 kilometers, the entire operation — from rock crushing and grinding mills to conveyor systems and ventilation fans — depended entirely on on-site power generation.

The challenge was significant: ambient temperatures regularly exceeded 40°C, dust levels were extreme, and the site operated around the clock. Any power interruption could halt production, leading to substantial financial losses and potential safety hazards for underground workers.

The Challenge

  • Location: Remote mining site, 150km from nearest grid connection
  • Climate: Extreme heat (40°C+), high dust, seasonal heavy rains
  • Load requirement: 2,500 kVA continuous prime power
  • Operation mode: 24/7 continuous operation, 365 days per year
  • Fuel logistics: Diesel delivery only possible during dry season via unpaved roads

Our Solution

After a thorough assessment of the site conditions and power requirements, MechVolt Power designed and delivered a multi-unit parallel power system:

  • Primary units: 3 × 1000 kVA Cummins-powered diesel generators in soundproof canopies, configured for parallel operation with automatic load sharing
  • Backup unit: 1 × 800 kVA standby generator for N+1 redundancy
  • Control system: Advanced ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) with intelligent load management, capable of starting backup units within 10 seconds if any primary unit fails
  • Fuel storage: Double-walled bulk fuel tank with 50,000-liter capacity, sufficient for 7 days of continuous operation at full load
  • Cooling system: Heavy-duty radiator systems with oversized cores designed for 50°C ambient temperature operation

Results

The power system has been operating reliably for over 18 months since commissioning, with an uptime exceeding 99.5%. The parallel configuration allows for flexible power output adjustment based on production schedules, and the N+1 redundancy ensures that maintenance can be performed on individual units without interrupting operations.

Fuel consumption has been optimized through intelligent load management, achieving a 12% reduction compared to the client’s initial estimates. The robust cooling and air filtration systems have performed well in the dusty, high-temperature environment with minimal maintenance issues.

Client Feedback

“MechVolt Power understood our requirements from day one. Their engineering team designed a system that not only meets our power needs but handles the extreme conditions of our mining site. The parallel setup gives us the flexibility and reliability we need to keep production running 24/7.”
